On Saturday night, Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) journey from IPL 2024 ended after a defeat against Royal Challengers Bangalore. A day after this defeat, the great captain of the team Mahendra Singh Dhoni returned to Ranchi. The match was played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, in which CSK was given a huge target of 219 runs.

CSK had to score at least 201 runs in this match to remain in the race for the playoffs. Despite brilliant late innings from Dhoni (25) and Ravindra Jadeja (42), the team could only score 191/7 runs. In the last over of the match, Dhoni gave some hope to the team by hitting a 110 meter long six, but he was out on the very next ball. It was his failure to read the slower ball that completely changed the momentum of the match.
In this match, Dhoni scored 25 runs in 13 balls with the help of three fours and a big six, which proves that his hitting power is still unmatched. But with the disappointment of the defeat, Dhoni decided to return to his hometown Ranchi.

Dhoni was seen at the Ranchi airport on Sunday, when he returned home after the heartbreaking defeat. There is speculation that this match could be his last in the IPL, although he has not yet officially announced his retirement. The 41-year-old Dhoni continued to play despite knee problems this season, which was often seen with an ice pack tied to his knee while leaving the field.

Former CSK opener Matthew Hayden, while speaking to Star Sports, shared his thoughts on Dhoni’s legacy. Hayden said:
“Yeah, I think the thing is when you get to the end of his career, whether it’s the last part of his career or not, you don’t want to see diminishing returns as an athlete. First of all, as a leader, he is the Thala of Chennai Super Kings. This is telling me that there is nothing here about becoming anything other than first place. He is using his brain and all his knowledge of cricket wildly. And of course, the strength is there and that has always been MS Dhoni. He always hits the balls at this stage of the innings. From the front you can understand how players can hit it. But on the back side, it’s really hard to hit balls,”
Whatever Dhoni’s future holds, his image in the IPL is that of an unmatched captain and great player. His sporting skills and leadership qualities have led Chennai Super Kings to success many times. CSK’s journey in IPL 2024 may have ended, but Dhoni’s legacy will always live on in the hearts of cricket fans.
