According to Ricky Ponting, he was approached for the post of India’s head coach, but he has rejected the offer. He said that he is not ready for this post yet as it does not suit his lifestyle.
Ponting’s decision is an important news in the Indian cricket world, as he has the experience of working with the Delhi Capitals IPL team for seven seasons as a coach. He has also served as Australia’s interim T20 coach at international level.
Ponting also shared that he had not received any suggestion from the BCCI to take up the position. He revealed that there were some face-to-face conversations during the IPL, but only to determine his level of interest.
What was discussed with Ponting with ICC?
Ponting told the ICC, “…I had some face-to-face conversations during the IPL to gauge my level of interest in whether I would take up the position or not.”
“I would love to become the senior coach of the national team, but I have other work in my life and I want to spend some time at home… Everyone knows that if you work with the Indian team, you are in the IPL team. Can’t join, so it won’t be any of this either.
“Also, being a national head coach is a job 10 or 11 months a year, and as much as I want to do it, it just doesn’t fit into my lifestyle right now and the things I really enjoy doing,
Ricky Ponting gives reason for refusing the post of India’s head coach
Ponting gave several reasons behind his decision, such as the timing of becoming a national head coach is a demanding one and he does not find it compatible with his current lifestyle. He was also worried about not being included in the IPL team while working with India.
Additionally, Ponting discussed moving to India with his family and his children and received their support. He was supported by the curiosity of his son, who loved India’s cricket culture.
Currently, there are several candidates for head coach positions in Indian cricket, such as Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming, Lucknow Super Giants head coach Justin Langer, and Kolkata Knight Riders mentor Gautam Gambhir.
Ponting supported his decision by saying that he had seen some other names also being discussed, but it was not possible for him at present.
