He admitted that the desire to perform better on overseas tours has affected the spin-playing technique of the Indian batsmen.
According to him, the Indian batsmen need to learn to play spin again before the upcoming five Tests at home.
Speaking to talkSPORT Cricket, Doeschate said,
“We lost against Sri Lanka recently. India’s mindset has become such that they are desperate to do well abroad.”
He admitted that this mindset has undermined the Indian technique of playing spin, which was earlier an important strength of the Indian cricket team.
Doeschate says his primary aim is to make the Indian batsmen master the game of spin again.
“It’s an area I’m looking forward to helping. My goal is to get Indian cricketers back among the best players of spin in the world.”
He emphasized that it is not just dependent on technical knowledge but also on mindset, situational awareness and understanding the different stages of the game. “We have to put forward ideas clearly, de-briefing and maintaining a good mental state.”
Talking about the Indian team’s preparation for the next big events, Doeschate said, “We have the Champions Trophy, and there are only three ODIs left to prepare. It will be challenging to switch between different formats and prepare the team for it.”
He also expressed hope of India qualifying for the final of the World Test Championship (WTC). “With 10 Test matches, it’s a great opportunity. India will play a five-match Test series against Australia.”
Doucet said it will be challenging to play against Australia as they have just won the World Cup. Still, he expressed excitement about the next 18 months, which includes all the major series and challenges.
“It’s a very exciting time as a coach. It includes all the series and challenges that you want to face.”
