An experienced player like Paras Mahambre has warned Gautam Gambhir’s new Indian coaching staff about supporting and training Shami.
An experienced bowler like Shami is needed to give freshness and pace to the Indian bowling, especially he can be important for India in Test cricket. But it is important to understand his fitness and his special way of playing and train him properly.
Gautam Gambhir said that to train a player like Shami smartly, it is necessary to understand his wishes and support him.
He said, “We all know what Shami brings. The staff should talk to him and find out what he wants to do. He is not young anymore, so where does he fit in and how many more years does he want to play? How can we use him wisely?”
Mahambrey also pointed out that a proper plan has to be made to understand a learned bowler like Shami and address his weaknesses. It is also a challenge for the Indian coaching staff to decide how long Shami should play and how to prepare him well.
“The primary role of a bowler is to take wickets. If you are not skilled, you will not be in the team. Simple,” Mhambrey said.
“Individual fitness varies and cannot be of the same level. So, players should be treated differently. You cannot compare Shami to a youngster who has just come in. You have to understand what Shami is worth. Do you need Shami to yo-yo or bowl this many balls in a Test and win matches for India?”
With this finer detailing in place, the Indian team will now look ahead and prepare for the upcoming Test series in Australia. The Rohit Sharma-led side will need to lean on their experienced bowlers, with Shami being a key contributor.
