Chennai Super Kings (CSK) veteran former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni still does not seem confident about the IPL 2024 season.

Dhoni, under whose leadership CSK has won the title many times, does not seem as excited to play in the league this time as fans expect from him.

Dhoni underwent knee surgery after the 2023 edition of the IPL, in which he led CSK to victory in the final by defeating Gujarat Titans.

Currently, the IPL is the only cricket tournament in which Dhoni plays, as he retired from international cricket in August 2020. In the 2024 edition, he played all 14 matches of the team and also took wickets.

This time the indication of CSK’s succession plan was given when Dhoni handed over the captaincy to opener Ruturaj Gaikwad. Under Gaikwad’s captaincy, the team managed to make it to the playoffs, but finished fifth by a very narrow margin.

Dhoni is 43 years old and questions about his IPL future have been raised at the end of the season for the last few years.

“There is still a lot of time for this,” Dhoni said at an event in Hyderabad. “We have to see what decision they take on retaining players etc. Right now the ball is not in our court.

“So, when the rules and regulations are formalised, I will take a decision, but it should be in the best interest of the team.”

The BCCI has recently held a meeting with the IPL owners, in which the plan for the upcoming season was discussed. The meeting included issues like the possibility of a mega auction, the return of the Right to Match (RTM) option and retaining the impact player rule.

Now it remains to be seen what the future holds for Dhoni in the next season of IPL and whether he will stay with CSK and play another season or will this be the last season of his career.
