The fate of both India and Pakistan now rests on the upcoming matches and their Net Run Rate (NRR).

Even a small mistake could knock the team out of the tournament.

India Qualification Scenarios

The situation for India is both simple and difficult. Team India must win both of its remaining matches, against Zimbabwe and West Indies.

Scenario 1: “If India beat Zimbabwe and West Indies, and South Africa beat West Indies, then India and South Africa will qualify.”

That is, if India wins both matches and South Africa beats West Indies, then India and South Africa will directly advance to the semi-finals.

Scenario 2: “If West Indies beat South Africa, India must win big against Zimbabwe (by 100+ runs or a fast chase) and also beat West Indies. Then Net Run Rate (NRR) will decide between India and West Indies.”

In this situation, India needs a big win against Zimbabwe, either by more than 100 runs or a fast run chase. They must also defeat the West Indies. After that, the decision will be made by NRR.

If Zimbabwe defeats South Africa, the top two teams will be decided by NRR between India, West Indies, and South Africa.

Clearly, India needs not just a win, but a convincing victory.

Pakistan Qualification Scenario

After the defeat to England, Pakistan’s path has become difficult, but there is still hope.

Scenario 1: “Pakistan must beat Sri Lanka in their last Super 8 match. They also need New Zealand to lose both of their remaining games.”

This means that Pakistan must defeat Sri Lanka and New Zealand must lose both of their matches.

Scenario 2: “If New Zealand wins one match and loses one, then qualification will be decided by Net Run Rate (NRR). Pakistan must have a better NRR than New Zealand.”

If New Zealand wins one match and loses another, the matter will come down to NRR. In such a situation, Pakistan’s run rate will need to be better than New Zealand’s.

Any other scenario will result in Pakistan being eliminated from the tournament.

The current situation is such that India will have to win both matches by a large margin, while Pakistan will have to win both matches and pray for New Zealand’s defeat.

The semi-final picture will depend entirely on the results of the next matches.
