Former New Zealand cricketer Scott Styris has recently made an interesting statement, in which he has shared his opinion on the future of Indian cricket.
Suryakumar Yadav was recently appointed as the T20I captain of the Indian team after Rohit Sharma retired from the post of T20 International captain.
Styris believes that Suryakumar Yadav, known to cricket lovers as SY, is only a temporary captain option for India.
Speaking to India Today, Styris said, “I think Suryakumar Yadav is a short-term option. I don’t think any of the players that Gautam Gambhir has at the moment are natural captains.”
He further said, “He is buying time to know who will be the next long-term captain.”
On the contrary, Gautam Gambhir, who is playing a major role in Indian cricket, wants to groom Shubman Gill as the country’s future long-term captain, which is probably why he appointed him as the vice-captain against Sri Lanka.
Styris also pointed out that players like Shubman Gill can be important for India for the next 10 years, but he is not fully ready yet. Therefore, it can be a good decision to include experienced players in the team.
Styris also suggested that although keeping the long-term perspective in mind, if Suryakumar Yadav does well, he can remain the captain of India till the 2026 T20 World Cup.
In this context, Styris said, “If he (SY) does well, he can be the captain in the next T20 World Cup. And after that, you can consider Gill or any other possible option. But yes, I think it is a really smart decision.”
Styris’ views reflect that the Indian cricket team should approach the captaincy selection process in a balanced manner, supporting experienced players in the present and planning for the long term.
