World record Matthew created history by scoring more than 50 runs in each of his first five ODIs. This is a record that also surpassed former Indian batsman Navjot Singh Sidhu, who had done this four times at the beginning of his career.
In the second ODI against England at Lord’s, Breetzke scored 85 runs in 77 balls. He was dismissed by Jofra Archer’s stormy yorker, but by then he had registered his name in the record books.
After being dismissed on Archer’s ball, UltraEdge showed in the review that the ball did not touch the bat. Ball tracking showed three red cards, and Breetzke’s innings ended.
But his innings told everyone how dangerous a batsman he is.
This achievement of Breetzke is no coincidence. He played a brilliant innings of 150 runs against New Zealand in his debut match.
Then he scored 83 against Pakistan, 57 and 88 against Australia, and now 85 against England. Each time his batting showed amazing patience and brilliant strokeplay.
This achievement of his has included him in the list of select South African players who have scored 50+ runs five times in a row.
This list includes legends like Jonty Rhodes (2000-01), Quinton de Kock (2017 and 2019), and Heinrich Klaasen (2024-25). But this record of Breetzke is special because he did it at the very beginning of his career.
Times of India Sports Desk wrote,
“Matthew Breetzke has become the first batter in men’s ODI history to score fifty-plus in each of his first five innings,”
This brilliant start by Breetzke has excited cricket fans. People are not tired of praising him on social media.
Some are calling him a new superstar, while some are saying that he will soon make big records for South Africa.
