Everyone is surprised to hear these things about the 1983 World Cup hero Kapil Dev. Yograj asked why that old match fixing case was closed and why no one talks about it.
What is the whole matter?
First of all, let’s talk about that old scandal. In June 1997, former player Manoj Prabhakar openly said that Kapil Dev and some other people had offered him money to play poorly in the 1994 Singer Cup in Colombo.
These allegations were so big that BCCI had to form a committee of former Chief Justice YV Chandrachud for investigation.
The committee submitted its report in April 2000. He said that Prabhakar told this 3-6 years after the incident, did not name the bribe giver, did not give any proof and his allegations did not match the facts.
Then CBI and BCCI’s anti-corruption officer K. Madhavan investigated in November 2000 and reported that no concrete evidence of match fixing or bribery was found against Kapil Dev. Kapil got a clean chit and the case was closed.
But now Yograj Singh has opened this old wound. In an interview to InsideSport, he said that Kapil, Mohammad Azharuddin and many others were involved in match fixing.
He demanded to reopen the file. His words were exactly like this: “Ask all journalists, where is the match-fixing file that was closed in the Supreme Court… Do you know anything about it? Do you know anything about it? I am saying, ask these questions. Do you know who all were caught in match-fixing? First Kapil Dev’s name came, then Azharuddin’s name came, then many people’s names came. Why did you close that file? Open it.”
Yograj further said that the file will not be opened because the necks of many big players will be cut. He also shared the story of one of his journalist friends who received threats.
His exact words: “No. Why? Many legends’ heads will be chopped off. I have told you what is true and what is false. Why don’t you do this? I have said many times. We have Mr. Luthra. He is a journalist. He was my best friend. We used to talk a lot. He told me that people came to break his house and set it on fire.
“I said, are you scared of these things? You are afraid that they will say something to your family, burn your office. Here, they have even done goondagardi. So people are scared.”
How true these allegations are will be known only after investigation, but such bold statements are made, but this time the talk is on a legend like Kapil Dev.
