The ongoing war of words on the cricket field has once again become a topic of discussion. Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden recently reacted to Nathan Lyon’s comments.
Lyon has described Indian batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal as a big challenge for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which is scheduled to be played in Australia.
Jaiswal, who is the new hope of Indian batting, has had a great start to his career and the tour of Australia could prove to be a big test for him.
Lyon told ESPNcricinfo
“I haven’t faced Jaiswal yet but he will be challenging for all the bowlers.”
Hayden sees Lyon’s comments as a strategic move.
“It is good that a big player (Lyon) has tried to put pressure on Jaiswal, who has emerged as an important player for Indian cricket.”
Hayden also praised Jaiswal’s batting attributes, especially his ability to hit over the covers. However, he also said that on the big grounds and bouncy pitches of Australia, Jaiswal will have to adapt.
Also, Hayden felt the lack of Cheteshwar Pujara for India, who could have proved to be an important player in Australian conditions.
“Pujara’s absence can be a challenge for the Indian team as the contribution of an experienced player like him is important.”
Hayden concluded by saying that the Australian team is eager to rectify their poor performance as they have lost their last two Test series against India.
“It’s a great opportunity for both teams, to see who really excels,” he said.
The contest between the two teams for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is expected to be extremely exciting and competitive, testing not only the individual abilities of the players but also the reputation of the cricket of both the countries at stake.
