Indian cricket legend and current captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli recently revealed how former skipper MS Dhoni played a key role in shaping his career. Rohit Sharma spoke about how MS Dhoni gave him confidence and always stood by the youngsters.
Till date, MS Dhoni is credited with taking the Indian cricket team to the heights of success in all three formats of the game.
The main reason for this is the important decisions taken by him, one of which is that he did the important work of bringing players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja into the team.
Disclosing the same, now Rohit-Virat openly praised former captain MS Dhoni for improving his career, where he said, “Dhoni’s understanding of the game and his understanding of dealing with pressure is unparalleled.”
Rohit Sharma told Star Sports
“I made my World Cup debut under him (Dhoni) in 2007 and since then we have come a long way, we have played a lot of cricket together. His ability to stay with the young player and encourage him, no matter what the situation of the game, no matter what the performance of the player is, he just tries to make sure that there is enough patience around the player, the player does not feel insecure, and I think that is a very important thing when a player comes into the team.”
“And even for a player who has played a lot of games, he can go through a bad phase, you need someone to come up to you and pat your back and say ‘hey nothing to worry about, you have all the abilities, talent and everything, just need to go out there and enjoy. You need that kind of support and cooperation from your captain and that’s what we got when he was the captain.”
Virat Kohli, who also played under Dhoni’s captaincy, said:
“His understanding of the game and his understanding of handling pressure is unmatched. And their strategic capability, obviously the world has seen in so many years. His tactical brilliance as a captain. When I also became captain, I used to discuss a lot of things with him.
“And on the other hand, when I was the vice-captain and he was the captain, I would constantly go to him with ideas. And that’s why we have such a good and mutually respectful relationship because both of us have always fought for what’s best for the team.”
Under the leadership of Dhoni, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have taken Indian cricket to new heights, and the impact of which is still visible today.
