“Don’t Kill Virat Kohli for a Dive”, World Cup hero Balwinder Sandhu Warns BCC

Sandhu suggests using “specialist fielders” to keep these top players fit so they can perform well in major tournaments.

Sandhu wrote in his Mid-Day column, “The best players limp into finals like wounded soldiers.”

He says it’s crucial to protect these stars, otherwise India’s dream of winning an ICC trophy will remain unfulfilled.

The Burden of Superstars and the Fear of Injury

Rohit and Kohli have retired from T20 and Test cricket, but they remain the lifeblood of India in ODIs. Jasprit Bumrah is struggling with injuries. Sandhu says international cricket takes a toll on these players.

To reduce their fatigue and the risk of injury, the BCCI should employ specialist fielders.

He said, “No one buys a ticket to watch Kohli dive at square leg. They come for the cover drive.”

Sandhu argues that stars can be saved by using substitute fielders in domestic cricket and the IPL.

He says, “And please stop romanticizing fielding. Diving catches look good on replays. They can also send players to the surgery table.”

Eye on the Australia tour

Rohit and Kohli may play in the three-match ODI series against Australia starting October 19. Both last won the 2025 Champions Trophy, defeating New Zealand.

But their places in the 2027 ODI World Cup are not confirmed. Both have not been included in India A’s series against Australia A because they are preparing on their own.

Sandhu’s point is clear: the BCCI needs to understand the value of its stars.
