Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has once again returned to the role of cricket administrator. He has been elected the new President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).
Ganguly was elected to the post without any opposition at the CAB’s 94th Annual General Meeting held on September 22, 2025. He previously served as CAB President from 2015 to 2019.
This time, he replaces his elder brother Snehasish Ganguly, who stepped down after completing a six-year term.

Ganguly’s new mission: Making Eden Gardens shine
The 53-year-old Ganguly now faces many major responsibilities. His first task is to prepare the pitch at Kolkata’s famous Eden Gardens for the first Test match between India and South Africa in November 2025.
This will be the first Test at this ground since the historic day-night Test between India and Bangladesh in 2019.
Ganguly said, “This will be a good Test match. South Africa are world champions. I will think about it. Everything is there – good pitches, good crowds, infrastructure is there.”
He also stated that hosting big matches for next year’s T20 World Cup is his priority.
Ganguly also said, “You just have to handle it the right way and make sure it’s a good match. Both India and South Africa are good teams, I’m sure it will be a good Test match.”
His plan is to ensure cricket fans in Kolkata have a great experience.
BCCI and T20 World Cup Preparations
Ganguly will represent the CAB at the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting in Mumbai on September 28.
He congratulated the new BCCI president, Mithun Manhas, saying, “I’ll speak to the board. They are new members as well. I wish him (the new BCCI president) all the best. It will be different from playing cricket.
I’m sure he will do well. It’s not only about Mithun; there are other new office-bearers like Raghuram Bhatt.”
Ganguly wants to work with the BCCI to ensure Eden Gardens hosts as many matches as possible for the T20 World Cup.
In addition, Ganguly has another big plan. He wants to increase the spectator capacity of Eden Gardens to over 100,000.
If this plan is implemented, the stadium will become India’s second-largest cricket stadium after the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Ganguly said, “Whatever happens, it will happen after next year’s T20 World Cup. It will take time. The lease has been renewed.”
This clearly shows that Ganguly is ready to bring about another major change in cricket administration.
