This rule is for players who have not played international cricket for at least five years and can be placed in the uncapped category.
This rule was earlier applicable from the first season of IPL but was abolished in 2021 as it was never used. The withdrawal of the rule was discussed during a recent meeting between the BCCI and the owners of the IPL franchises.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK), in particular, have pushed for this rule to be brought back, allowing MS Dhoni to be retained as an uncapped player.
This rule can be extremely important for CSK, as it will allow them to retain their key players.
For example, if the rule is reimposed, CSK will get an opportunity to retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player.
According to a reliable source,
“There is a strong possibility of the rule coming back. It has been discussed in detail and can be re-implemented once the rules are announced for the players.”
“There is still a lot of time for that,” former India captain MS Dhoni said at an event in Hyderabad this month. We have to see what decision they take on retaining players etc. I will take my decision after the rules and laws are formalised.”
Meanwhile, off-spinner R Ashwin said on his YouTube channel:
“Will Dhoni play as an uncapped player? That’s a big question mark. That’s correct. He hasn’t played international cricket. He has retired. So, he is an uncapped player. He is not a capped player.”
“Can a player like Dhoni play as an uncapped player? It’s a different conversation. Obviously, if someone talks about Dhoni, everyone will talk about it.”
The return of this rule will definitely make CSK and Dhoni fans happy, as it will give them an opportunity to see their favourite player in another season.
