Asiya Cup 2025: Who is out of the team?
Suryakumar Yadav will remain the captain, but Shubman Gill was made the vice-captain, surprising everyone.
Gill was out of the last few T20 series, but his explosion in the England Tests – 754 runs at an average of 75 – brought him straight into the team.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer were dropped from the main team!
Shreyas had batted explosively for Punjab Kings in the IPL, but the selectors ignored him.
Jaiswal has been kept on standby, meaning backup player.
He scored 578 runs in 21 T20 matches, averaging 30.42 and strike rate 139.27. In IPL 2025, he silenced everyone by scoring 650 runs.
Selector Ajit Agarkar said in the press conference,
“Sanju Samson was opening because Gill and Jaiswal weren’t playing, and the way Abhishek performed, it was hard to pick anyone else besides him.”
There is suspense over Sanju’s place now. He and Abhishek together formed a solid opening pair, but with Gill’s arrival, Sanju may shift to the middle order, where his record is weak.
Jitesh Sharma was preferred as wicketkeeper because he is a finisher.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav said smilingly,
“We have good players with amazing skills, which makes my job easier.”
Jasprit Bumrah’s return in bowling strengthened the team. Pacers like Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana and spinners Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakraborty will do wonders.
Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dubey and Akshar Patel in all-rounder roles. Young talents like Rinku Singh and Tilak Verma are also included. Tilak had scored centuries against South Africa and England.
