50-Over World Cup Is the Real One, Says Sanjay Manjrekar

The debate surrounding the Cricket World Cup has intensified once again in the world of cricket. This time, the discussion has been sparked by former Indian cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar.

He has clearly stated that for him, the real “Cricket World Cup” will always be the 50-over ODI World Cup. He believes that the T20 World Cup should not be given the same status as the ODI World Cup, which is held only once every four years.

Sanjay Manjrekar’s clear message

Sanjay Manjrekar wrote on his X account, “For me the ‘Cricket World Cup’ will always be the 50 overs World Cup. The T20 version held every two years must not be given the same status of a World Cup that comes once in 4 years. I prefer the original name for it – The World T20.”

His statement comes at a time when the popularity of ODI cricket is constantly being questioned. The ODI format, caught between Test and T20 cricket, seems to be gradually losing its relevance.

Cricket experts believe that today’s fans prefer faster-paced matches. This is why the craze for T20 cricket is constantly growing, while the same enthusiasm is not seen for ODI matches. Manjrekar argues that the frequent occurrence of a tournament diminishes its importance.

R Ashwin also concerned about the future of ODIs

Indian off-spinner R Ashwin has also expressed his concern on this issue. He said on his YouTube channel, “I am not sure about the future of ODI after the 2027 World Cup. I am a little worried about it. Of course, I am following the Vijay Hazare Trophy, but the way I followed the SMAT (Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy), I am finding it slightly difficult to follow.”

Ashwin believes that Test cricket will retain its place, but the situation is not easy for ODI cricket.

Ashwin further added, “Also, we need to know what the audience wants to watch. I feel Test cricket still has space, but ODI cricket, I truly feel (it) doesn’t have the space.”

He also mentioned that when big players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli played in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the audience’s interest suddenly increased. Currently, the Indian team is busy preparing for the T20 World Cup and will begin its campaign against the USA next week.

Meanwhile, this concern expressed by cricketing legends regarding ODI cricket is being seen as an important indicator of the future direction of the sport.
