England’s 24-year-old wicketkeeper Jamie Smith has set a new record in Test cricket. With his brilliant century in the Old Trafford Test, Smith has become England’s youngest wicket-keeper batsman.

He has scored a Test century. His innings gave England a massive 122-run lead in the first innings.
Smith scored 358 runs off 136 balls. His batting put England in a strong position in the first innings, giving his team self-belief. Riding on Smith’s century, England got off to a flying start against Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lankan team, in response, faced trouble at the beginning of the game. Chris Woakes and Gus Atkinson took one wicket each in the first two overs. Sri Lanka were 10/2 at the break.
At the start of the third day, Smith struggled to get into rhythm quickly. However, she played Asitha Fernando’s deliveries well to take her innings past the ninety-run mark. His ability to rotate the strike in tandem with Gus Atkinson helped England cross 300.
Smith’s brilliant innings came to an end when Milan Rathnayake dismissed him off a simple delivery. Smith played a short and wide ball, took a slight edge and gave the catch to the keeper. Thereafter, Prabhat Jayasuriya ended their innings and restricted England’s score to 358.
Mark Wood also showed an edge in his bowling and hit a boundary and a six against Jayasuriya to boost the morale of the crowd. However, Wood’s stump fall ended England’s innings and the Sri Lankan team faced a tough challenge before the lunch break.
After lunch, Sri Lanka’s openers faced a tough time. Chris Woakes dismissed Nishan Madushka for a duck in the third over, while Atkinson also sent back Kusal Mendis for a duck. Now, the onus is on the experienced duo of Dimuth Karunaratne and Angelo Mathews to bail the team out of this crisis and make a comeback in the match.
This exciting state of play in the Old Trafford Test has made the spectators curious as to which team’s strategy will go ahead and which team will claim victory in the Test match.
