Zaheer Khan, the newly appointed mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants, has openly supported the impact player rule of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Which was implemented during the year 2023 IPL season.
During a press conference held at the Lucknow Super Giants owner’s headquarters on Wednesday, Zaheer praised the rule and said that it is making a big contribution to the development of Indian cricket.
Zaheer Khan said in a statement on impact player rule
“There is a debate going on about the impact of the by-law, but I want to say on record that I am fully prepared for it,”
Emphasising on the benefits of the Impact Player Rule, he said that the rule is providing significant opportunities to young and uncapped Indian players.
However, this rule has received mixed reactions. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are two of the best batsmen in the world at the moment.
While Kohli said that the rule has disturbed the balance of the game, Rohit Sharma admitted that he is not a big fan of the rule.
Moreover, discussions between IPL team owners and BCCI officials in July have also seen a lack of consensus on the continuation of this rule.
Zaheer Khan feels the impact player rule has given many uncapped Indian players a chance to prove their mettle.
“This will be evident in the mega auction when teams will focus on these players.”
Further He says,
“The rule (Impact Player Rule) has given youngsters an opportunity to gain the necessary exposure to the game, which is extremely important for their development.”
Zaheer also addressed concerns about the impact of the rule on all-rounders. He says that the impact player rule may reduce the space for half of the all-rounders, but the real all-rounders will always remain valuable assets.
“If you are a genuine all-rounder, no one can stop you. Your ability to bat and bowl will always add value.”
Zaheer Khan’s statement underlines the new direction the game is taking in the IPL and signals that the way is open for innovation and improvement in Indian cricket.
Also, the start of his new stint for Lucknow Super Giants confirms that the team is taking significant steps towards the future of cricket.
