Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) assistant coach Simon Helmot today commented on his team’s performance after the match, in which he clarified that their game plan failed despite being aggressive early in the match.
Speaking with PTI at a press conference, Helmut said, “We had no intention of changing our brand or approach. We wanted to be aggressive, but also smart and deal with situations.”
He continued, “Our plan was definitely not to be all out for 113 in the 18th over. We played in a really positive manner, but some good balls (from KKR bowlers) early on put us on the back foot. Unfortunately. Say, it was one of those days.”
Commenting on the loss of wickets, Helmut said, “Travis is experienced in playing left-arm fast bowlers. We have had matches where both he and Abhishek (Sharma) have scored runs.”
He added, “Obviously, we didn’t get as much support from the middle order as we wanted, but it was a good enough ball to get Head out.”
Helmot praised the Shreyas Iyer-led franchise and said that they displayed an aggressive mindset throughout the season.
He further said, “We have to give credit to KKR. They have had a great season, they have won 79 percent of the matches and have shown aggressive play with the bat, ball and on the field. But, we will make a strong comeback next season.”
“They (KKR) are a very balanced team with their four fast bowlers and two very skilled spinners. They have been a great team with great batting depth and they deserve to win this IPL.”
Asked about the positives in SRH’s performance this season, Helmut credited pace bowlers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T Natarajan. He also praised all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy’s fielding.
“I think Natthu and Bhuvi had a great end to the season, as well as Nitish Reddy, who is probably one of the best fielders in the competition,” he said.
He concluded, “…it is no coincidence that we managed to turn around our (lowest-placed) performance from last year. We will use this as a catalyst for next year’s season.”
