For the young man who has traveled from the streets of Delhi to the grounds of world cricket, it was the perfect ending to a T20I career that saw many ups and downs as captain.
India scored a record 176/7 in this title match, with Kohli playing a brilliant innings of 76 runs off 59 balls.
Virat Kohli announced his retirement
When asked if he is officially announcing his retirement, Kohli clarified it with Harsha Bhogle.
“Yes, I have done it. It was an open secret. It was nothing that I was not going to announce even if I lost. Now it’s time to take the T20 game forward for the next generation.”
Virat Kohli is one of those cricketers who have won both ODI and T20 World Cups so far. He played his first T20 match in 2010 and has participated in many T20 World Cups after that.
He further said, “It has been a long wait for us to win an ICC tournament. You look at a player like Rohit (Sharma), he has played 9 T20 World Cups and this is my sixth World Cup.
Kohli said, “He deserves it. It is difficult to hold back your emotions and I think it will make sense later. It is a great day and I am grateful.”
After this entire journey of struggle and achievement, Virat Kohli’s retirement announcement opens a new page in the history of Indian cricket.
His contributions and his leadership examples will set a benchmark for players of the future.
