SRK Reveal, How KKR Released Andre Russell and Made Him Their New ‘Power Coach

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have made a new and interesting move for IPL 2026 by releasing Andre Russell. Russell, who retired from the IPL on November 30, will now serve as KKR’s “Power Coach.”

KKR CEO Venky Mysore told ESPNcricinfo, “What you gave us was power,” and that’s why Russell was offered the new role.

Russell’s IPL career spanned 140 matches, scoring 2,651 runs, taking 123 wickets, and winning the MVP award twice. He played a key role in KKR’s victories in 2014 and 2024.

However, the time had come for him to reconnect with the game. Mysore said, “Shah Rukh said it’s time,” making it clear that the time was right for Russell.

Why KKR Released Russell

Venky Mysore explained that the decision wasn’t based solely on cricket. Russell’s contract value was ₹12 crore, and retaining him would have resulted in a purse deduction of ₹18 crore for KKR.

Releasing Russell immediately allowed him to recover all of this money for the upcoming mini-auction. Mysore admitted that the decision was emotionally difficult. He recalled experiencing “sleepless nights.”

Russell, who will be 38 in IPL 2026, had already begun contemplating life after professional cricket.

Shah Rukh Khan suggested that this might be the right time for a new role. Mysore joked that he had probably spoken to Russell more than he had his wife in 11 years.

Birth of the ‘Power Coach’ Role

The new role was decided upon spontaneously. “Power Coach” is a title that reflects Russell’s playing style and energy in the IPL.

In this role, Russell will mentor new players, teaching them how to think about hitting six runs in a tense chase.

Mysore said the change is a good fit for both teams. Russell is now fully prepared for this new role and will bring his strength and experience back to KKR.

With this new chapter, Andre Russell will be part of the team, not just as a player for KKR, but as a mentor and guide. His experience and understanding of cricket will now help the players improve.
