Now Jayasuriya has been appointed as the interim coach of the Sri Lankan cricket team, and he wants his players to continue their natural aggressive game.

Jayasuriya shared his views ahead of the three-match T20 series against India starting in Pallekele on Saturday.

He said, “Sri Lankan cricket is aggressive by nature. We do not want to change this nature. I want the players to adopt their natural game, because this is their strength. They need confidence and the right environment so that they can perform better.”

Jayasuriya’s appointment comes after the resignation of former coach Chris Silverwood. Silverwood stepped down after Sri Lanka failed to qualify for the 2024 T20 World Cup Super Eight

Jayasuriya expressed his disappointment over this failure, saying, “It was unfortunate that we could not qualify. It was disappointing for the Sri Lankan fans and we are also disappointed. The team knows what went wrong and we are discussing it. Mainly the batting did not perform well. We need to improve our game.”

55-year-old Jayasuriya described the new responsibility of coaching as challenging, but he accepted it, saying, “Coaching is always challenging, especially when you are coaching for your country. It takes hard work, but I am enjoying working with the players. It is a good experience.”

Praising the Indian team, Jayasuriya said, “India is a confident team. They are playing good cricket and have recently won the T20 World Cup. Although some key players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have retired, the current players are also very capable.

It will be a tough match for us, as they always play aggressive cricket and try to defeat the opposition quickly.”

Jayasuriya will also have to deal with the busy schedule of the T20 series. The three-match series is to be completed in just four days, which will make it challenging for the players to play consecutive matches.

Commenting on this, Jayasuriya said, “I think the players may find it difficult to play two matches consecutively. It is very tough. After a match we need at least 24 hours of rest. The first match ends at midnight and the next day we have to play the second match. It is tough for the boys. But now we cannot do much. We need to concentrate and play according to our strengths.”

Jayasuriya believes that aggressive play is the identity of Sri Lankan cricket, and he wants to carry out his coaching responsibilities while maintaining this nature.

The magic of his aggressive style in the world of cricket will now be seen in coaching as well.
