Shreyas Iyer’s Comeback Delayed: BCCI Denies Clearance Due to Weight Loss

Indian team’s star batsman and ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has suffered a major setback.

His return to cricket has now been postponed. BCCI doctors have not yet given him clearance to play.

Why the delay?

Iyer suffered a serious injury during the Australia tour. Following this, he lost weight rapidly, approximately 6 kg. Although he has regained some weight, the loss of muscle mass means his strength is not yet fully recovered. There are no problems with his batting, but the medical team doesn’t want to take any risks.

A BCCI official said, “There is no problem with his batting but he lost around six kgs after the injury in Australia. While he has regained some weight, there has been a drop in muscle mass which has further affected his optimum strength levels.”

He further added, “The medical team will not be taking any chances because he is a very important player in the ODI set up and his complete recovery is of utmost importance right now. The selectors and management will be informed about his present situation before they meet to pick the team for the New Zealand ODIs.”

Impact on the New Zealand series

Iyer will now remain at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence for at least another week. Clearance may be given by January 9th. The three ODIs against New Zealand are on January 11th, 14th, and 18th. Therefore, he is unlikely to play in this series. He might return for the knockout stages of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

An MCA official said, “There were a lot of positive developments as he batted in Mumbai, went to the CoE and was pushing himself to feature in the New Zealand ODIs. There were indications of him playing the Vijay Hazare Trophy matches on January 3rd and 6th too but we have now been told that he needs more time and will only be available from the knockout stages of the tournament.”

Iyer was working hard in the gym and nets, but the weight and strength issues still remain. The BCCI wants to ensure his complete fitness.
