Pant not only surpassed Rohit Sharma to become the highest run-scorer for India in the World Test Championship (WTC), but also broke many big records of Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
In the fourth Test being played at Old Trafford in Manchester, Pant showed that he is a real warrior.
On the first day, he suffered a leg injury when England fast bowler Chris Woakes’ ball hit his right leg.
It was later revealed that he had a fracture in his leg, and he would not be able to do wicketkeeping for the rest of the match. The BCCI said that Pant would bat only when needed, and Dhruv Jurel would take over wicketkeeping duties.
Pant Goes Past Rohit and Dhoni with Gutsy Half-Century
On the second day, when Shardul Thakur was dismissed in the 102nd over, Pant came on the field despite the pain. He had trouble running, but nobody could stop his spirits.
Pant played a brilliant innings of 54 runs in 75 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes. His off stump was blown off by Jofra Archer, but by then he had created history.
Pant surpassed Rohit Sharma (2716 runs) by scoring 2731 runs in 38 matches in WTC.
Not only this, he broke Dhoni’s record and also made the record of most 50+ scores (5) by an Indian wicketkeeper in a Test series and most 50+ scores (14) by a visiting wicketkeeper in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia).
Also, he equaled Virender Sehwag in terms of most sixes (90) in Tests.
God of cricket Sachin Tendulkar was also impressed by Pant’s spirit.
He wrote on X,
“Resilience is about playing through pain and rising above it. @RishabhPant17 showed tremendous character by walking back into the game with an injury and delivering a performance like that. His fifty is a powerful reminder of the grit and determination it takes to represent your country.”
Pant’s innings is a glimpse of India’s future in Test cricket. He brings new excitement with every ball.
Now the question is what more wonders will Pant’s bat do in the next Test?
