The focus right now is on the IPL 2025 Mega Auction retention rules.  The BCCI, the governing body of the IPL, traditionally determines these rules each season.  While official confirmation is still awaited, reports suggest the BCCI might retain the 3+1 format used in previous Mega Auctions.

This format allows franchises to retain a maximum of three players – a strategic choice that can shape the course of the auction.  Retaining too many players might limit their financial flexibility at the auction while retaining too few could leave a gaping hole in their team’s core identity.

The “Right-to-Match” (RTM) card, the other crucial aspect of the 3+1 format, adds another layer of intrigue. This card allows franchises to match the highest bid offered by another team for a released player from their previous squad, essentially giving them a chance to retain a valuable asset.

Additionally, more RTM cards could allow franchises to strategically retain crucial players without blowing out their auction budget.

IPL Auction Retention Costs:

The BCCI dictates a tiered salary structure based on the number of players a franchise chooses to retain before the IPL Auction 2025.

One Retained Player: A single retained player commands a hefty INR 14 Crore salary.

Two Retained Players: The first retained player still commands INR 14 Crore, but the second receives INR 10 Crore, bringing the total cost to INR 24 Crore.

Three Retained Players: The first player earns INR 15 Crore, the second INR 11 Crore, and the third INR 7 Crore, for a combined cost of INR 33 Crore.

Four Retained Players: The most expensive option, with the first player receiving INR 16 Crore, the second INR 12 Crore, the third INR 8 Crore, and the fourth INR 6 Crore, for a total cost of INR 42 Crore.

Each IPL team enters the auction with a maximum purse of INR 100 Crore. Considering the above retention costs, a team retaining four players would start the auction with a remaining INR 58 Crore. This highlights the strategic importance of player retention.

Players in the IPL Auction: 

The IPL auction features a diverse pool of cricketing talent categorized as follows:

Capped Players: These are Indian players who have donned the national team jersey in any format.

Uncapped Players: Rising stars from the Indian domestic circuit who haven’t yet represented India.

Non-Indian/Overseas Players: This category includes capped, uncapped, or players from associate cricket nations – all vying for IPL contracts.

While there’s no limit to the number of players listed, the final pool depends on individual sign-ups and player approvals from their respective boards. The number has fluctuated in past auctions – from 578 in 2018 to 346 in 2019.

Remember, each IPL team can only have a maximum of eight foreign players, with only four allowed on the field at a time. So, franchises need to strategize their bids while considering this restriction.

IPL Auction 2025 Venue

Auction for the 2024 season took place at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai on December 19th, 2023. The roster featured a total of 333 cricketers who will vie for coveted spots in the prestigious league.
