Indian captain Shubman Gill not only had to face the English bowlers, but the crowd there also booed him fiercely. And on top of that, Ben Stokes added more fire to the atmosphere by dismissing Gill.
During the match, when Gill came out to bat in the 41st over, the Manchester crowd gave him a “warm” welcome. The sounds of hooting and taunting were echoing in the stadium.
All this was due to some of Gill’s actions in the Lord’s Test, where he questioned the time-wasting strategy of English openers Jack Crowley and Ben Duckett.
Gill had also openly said in the press conference that the England batsmen came to the crease 90 seconds late, which is against the “spirit of the game”. That’s it, this thing hurt the English fans!
Ben Stokes’ masterstroke
Gill ignored the hooting and played some great shots, but his innings did not last long. In the 50th over, England captain Ben Stokes bowled a brilliant ball, which hit Gill’s pad.
Gill did not even try to play a shot, and umpire Rod Tucker raised his finger without delay.
Stokes roared like a lion in front of Gill, and even after taking DRS, Gill had to return to the pavilion.
Gill was out after scoring 12 runs in just 23 balls, and Stokes won the hearts of the fans with this “cruel farewell”!
Dinesh Karthik praised
Speaking on Sky Sports, former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik praised Gill.
He said, “Gill’s captaincy is improving. His press conference outside the field was box office, he is stubborn, and this is a good thing.”
Karthik also said that Gill’s aggressive captaincy has made the series more exciting, even if the result was not in India’s favour.
