Harry Brook Climbs to No.2, Shubman Gill Back in Top-10: ICC Test Rankings Update

The final ICC Test Batting Rankings for 2025 were released by the International Cricket Council on Wednesday (December 31).

Significant changes were seen in the rankings following the Boxing Day Test played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Indian batsman Shubman Gill managed to return to the top-10, while England’s Harry Brook achieved his highest career ranking.

Shubman Gill Returns to Top-10, Australia’s Carey Slips

India’s Test captain Shubman Gill has regained his place in the top-10 of the latest ICC Test Batting Rankings. Despite playing only one innings in the recently concluded home Test series against South Africa, Gill has reached the 10th position with 730 rating points.

The right-handed batsman’s ranking improved as Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey slipped four places and dropped out of the elite list. Gill is now back among the world’s best batsmen and has become India’s second-highest rahnked Test batter.

Only Yashasvi Jaiswal is ahead of him, who is at number 8 with 750 rating points.

Harry Brook Becomes World’s No. 2 Test Batsman

England’s white-ball captain Harry Brook has made the biggest leap in the batting rankings. Brook showed patience and resilience on the challenging MCG pitch, scoring 41 and 18*, which benefited him greatly.

He overtook three big players, Kane Williamson, Travis Head, and Steve Smith, to secure his place in the top-5. Brook has become the world’s second-ranked Test batter at the end of the year.

Only his teammate Joe Root is ahead of him, who remains at the number 1 position with 867 rating points.

Meanwhile, Smith has slipped to fifth place due to his consistently poor performance. Pakistan’s Saud Shakeel has also moved up to 9th position, while Dinesh Chandimal (11th) and Rachin Ravindra (12th) have also gained one place each.

Jasprit Bumrah Continues to Dominate in Bowling Rankings

India’s dominance continues in the ICC Test Bowling Rankings. Jasprit Bumrah remains the world’s number-1 Test bowler with 879 rating points.

However, Australia’s Mitchell Starc and Pakistan’s Noman Ali are also challenging Bumrah’s position.

Starc’s outstanding performance in the ongoing Ashes 2025-26 has propelled him to second place with 843 rating points. Both Starc and Noman Ali have the same number of points, but the Australian star has the best chance to overtake the Pakistani spinner and potentially displace Bumrah in the fifth and final Ashes Test in Sydney, starting January 4th.

Scott Boland has also climbed two places to occupy the 7th position. Gus Atkinson, thanks to his Ashes performance, has moved up four places to share 13th position with Ravindra Jadeja.

On the other hand, Ravindra Jadeja remained the world’s number-1 Test all-rounder at the end of 2025 with 455 rating points. England captain Ben Stokes is in third place with 316 rating points.

Indian all-rounders Washington Sundar and Axar Patel are tied for 11th place with 202 rating points.

Atkinson has entered the top 10 all-rounders in Test cricket, reaching 8th position. Cameron Green has also moved up in the rankings to 17th place.
