In this press conference, he shared his views on the selection of the Indian cricket team and the challenging environment of the tour.

Gambhir’s views on Rohit and Virat’s future:

Talking about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Gambhir said, “I think both Rohit and Virat can still play a lot of cricket. They are capable of their fitness and if they remain fit, selection for the 2027 World Cup is possible. He confirmed that it will depend on their personal decision, but through their cricket experience, I still see them as players.”

Agarkar’s views on Hardik Pandya’s fitness:

Agarkar expressed his views on Hardik Pandya’s fitness issue, he said, “Fitness is something he has been struggling with. It becomes difficult for the selectors. The thinking behind this was that we want someone (as captain) who is more available.”

“We also feel that we can manage Hardik better, we have seen what he can do with the bat and ball in the World Cup. We talk to every player to see if their role has changed. And yes, we have spoken to him.

Shubman Gill to be made vice-captain:

Gill has been made the vice-captain due to his excellent game, about this Agarkar told, “Shubman Gill is a player who we feel is a player of all three formats. He has shown a lot of qualities in the last one year, this is what we hear from the dressing room. He has shown some good leadership qualities. We want to try and give him experience.”

Ravindra Jadeja’s absence:

On Ravindra Jadeja’s absence from the ODI series against Sri Lanka, Agarkar said, “Ravindra is an important player and we will need him in the upcoming series.”

Agarkar further said, “I think we should have made it clear when we announced the team. He has not been dropped from the team (but rested). There are many Test series coming up and he will play in many of them.”

Mohammed Shami’s return:

About Shami’s return, Agarkar said, “Shami has started bowling. The first Test is on September 19. This was always the target (his return by that time). Will he be able to return to the team by that time (Bangladesh series), I will have to talk to the people at the NCA for that.”

Gambhir’s relationship with Virat Kohli:

Gambhir said about his relationship, “There is a very good relationship between me and Virat. We are working together for the team.”

He also said, “This (rumor of a fight) is a good thing for TRP, but the relationship between me and him has been good. The important thing is that we are representing 140 crore Indians. We have shared messages. It is not important whether we talked before or after my announcement. He is a world-class player, I respect him a lot.”

In this press conference, Gambhir and Agarkar answered questions on various aspects of Indian cricket and shared their views on the future of the team. This is an important step in the team’s preparation before the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.
