In this context, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah’s hints indicate that an Indian coach will replace Rahul Dravid as the head coach from July 1, 2024. However, it is not yet clear who has applied for the post. The official deadline for submitting applications for the selection of the coach of the Indian cricket team ended on Monday.
A report by Cricbuzz gives detailed information on the matter. According to the report, a “very high-profile owner of an IPL franchise, who is very close to the top officials of the BCCI,” told that Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as the coach of the Indian cricket team is “a done deal and will be announced soon.”
Apart from this, a “high profile commentator” has also confirmed that serious efforts are being made to make Gambhir the coach.
However, the report also states that the lack of an official announcement makes it clear that the talks are still ongoing. Discussions are still on between the two parties and perhaps with some others as well.
Challenges for Gambhir if he accepts the head coach position
Generally, Gambhir is a successful mentor/coach in the IPL and a TV pundit who will not be able to work in other roles once he becomes the coach of the Indian cricket team, which experts say Gambhir may face some challenges before agreeing to this role, as the job of the coach of the Indian cricket team is very hectic, in which one has to remain busy all the time.
Given all these challenges, according to the report, Gambhir is “considering all the options.”
