A major controversy erupted in Bangladesh cricket when a statement by a director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) angered players and former cricketers.

Director Najmul Islam’s comments were perceived as questioning the loyalty of the players, leading to a strong backlash on social media.
The situation escalated to the point where there were reports of a potential boycott of a Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) match.
BCB distances itself from the statement, issues clarification
Amidst the growing controversy, the BCB clarified that it distanced itself from Director Najmul Islam’s statement. The board issued an official statement saying that the remarks did not reflect the board’s views or official stance.
The BCB stated, “The BCB does not endorse or take responsibility for any statement unless it is formally issued through the board’s designated spokesperson or the Media and Communications Department.”
The board also clarified that statements made without authorization would be considered personal. It also indicated that disciplinary action could be taken against anyone whose conduct harms the respect of the players or the image of Bangladesh cricket.
Meanwhile, it also emerged that a boycott of Thursday’s BPL match was being considered if the board did not stand in support of the players’ respect. This news further increased the pressure on the board.
Controversy fueled by comments on Tamim Iqbal
The entire controversy began when Najmul Islam used highly objectionable language regarding former captain Tamim Iqbal. He called Tamim an “Indian agent.”
This comment came after Tamim Iqbal advised making decisions regarding the T20 World Cup in India based on logic rather than emotion.
Former captain Mohammad Ashraful also expressed his displeasure on the issue.
He wrote on social media, “Issues should be handled internally. Such remarks demoralize players and damage the image of Bangladesh cricket.” Meanwhile, the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) reacted strongly to the statement, saying that using such language to describe a player who has represented the country for 16 years is “utterly condemnable.”
The BCB ultimately reiterated that it holds all its current and former players in the highest regard. According to the board, the players are the true strength of Bangladesh cricket, and their contributions and well-being will always be a priority.
